Ossining  Sankofa History

The Ossining Sankofa Homecoming Organization was established in 2009 with its main purpose being to stage a homecoming event for Ossining Village residents. The organization’s name, “Sankofa” is based on a concept originated on the continent of Africa. The word Sankofa means to honor positive values from the past and use them in the present. In August of 2010, the group successfully hosted the first Ossining Sankofa Homecoming. The three-day event featured a Friday night meet and greet fish fry, Saturday cookout and concert, an awards ceremony, a Saturday evening party and a Sunday wrap up cookout as well as other events. At the end of our first effort, the organization was extremely proud to declare it an overwhelming success. After much consideration and advice, it was decided that this event should take place every three years. Our second effort took place in August of 2013. In addition to the events that made our first venture a success, we included a couple of new things that we felt would enhance the weekend. We added a Saturday chicken and waffle brunch and a live performance at our Saturday night party. Each of the new events were very successful and helped to make our second homecoming a major success. Through our first two Sankofa Homecomings we have grown and gained a better perspective on the purpose of our mission. We now define ourselves as an organization that utilizes the values of our positive past to support positive and progressive social change in our community and to commemorate the African American contribution to the history of Ossining. It is in this spirit that at this year’s Homecoming we’re presenting an Ossining historical presentation by our town historian Dana White. Dana has put together a remarkable retrospective of Ossining history with included references to the Ossining African American experience.

For this our third Ossining Sankofa Homecoming, we have not only worked on ways to enhance the event, but ways to support positive issues that will preserve and strengthen the legacy of the Ossining African American Experience. It is our hope that you will join us this August 5, 6 & 7th for what promises to be a great event.
